URDANETA CITY—Two men riding in tandem on a Honda Wave motorcycle were gunned down and killed in an armed encounter with Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) personnel of Urdaneta City following a hot pursuit operation that ended in Barangay Cabaruan here at about 1:50 a.m. on March 22.

One of the fatalities was identified as Alvin Navarro, 35, of Paraan Street, Poblacion, Sta. Barbara town based on an identification card found by policemen in his pocket. The other fatality was not identified.

P/Chief Inspector Rollyfer Capoquian, chief of police of Urdaneta, said Navarro and his companion did not stop when they were flagged down by SWAT members led by SPO2 Jojo Mayo along Mac Arthur Highway in Barangay Nancamaliran West.

Instead, they sped off and opened fire on the SWAT men manning the checkpoint.

This prompted the policemen to give chase in their own motorcycles, and cornered the two on a vacant lot in Barangay Cabaruan where the latter continued to exchange fire with the lawmen.

Recovered from the two were four sachets of suspected shabu, one Cal. 45 pistol and one Cal. 38 revolver.

A report said that Navarro was verified as a drug personality in Sta. Barbara who surrendered last year.

The two were speeding westward from Urdaneta town proper when they came upon the SWAT checkpoint. (Leonardo Micua)
